Every bag is a unique work of art, handwoven by a female artisan from Papua New Guinea, the design captures her spiritual and cultural heritage, her story and her craft. Among Equals pays weavers a premium for each bilum created, allowing the tradition, and women-led businesses, to prosper in the modern world.
The yarns used are either a natural fibre, a wool mix or recycled acrylic fibres in unique colour palettes. The natural fibre is made from local trees found near the river and the dyes are made from berries and other plant-based ingredients. Each bag takes about six weeks to construct, during which time the weavers tell the stories that have inspired each design.
The bush twine used to weave this beautiful bilum is made by hand-rolling plant fibres over the knee. This medium size bilum (28cm wide) features a pattern inspired by the surrounding environment, lineage and life of the artisan.
